A QUARTER TO DAWN
Arriving in the dark, setting the camera up under the car interior light, I love getting out before daybreak and waiting for the light show. this one `i feel is one of my most mesmerising images, it was shot pre-dawn at Big Beach, Makena State Park, Maui, HI, back in November 2013.
CLEAR CUT COUPLE
It's the glassy ones that are popular, this one looks like a complex glass sculpture that perhaps took many hours to craft, only its a moment delivered by mother nature that lasts less than a thousandth of a second. I only noticed the couple in the background when it came to editing, I think they really make the shot.
HEAVYWEIGHT WARP
Ke'iki beach, on what's known as the 'seven mile miracle', the North Shore of Oahu. This beach produces some of the biggest and most amazing, powerful shore break in the world. shooting here on a big day turns up the fear and adrenalin dials way past eleven! Big, powerful, and mutant. To shoot here on high surf advisory days is always.. err.. interesting.
A VORTEX GRILL
When a close out wave (a wave that breaks uniformly across its length all at one time) first makes contact with the water in front, and, when the water is shallow & the bottom surface is hard like reef, vortex jets of air can get pulled into the water and form tubular spirals, following the curvature of the wave face, and surfacing out of the top, just behind the breaking wave. they are brief fleeting moments that don't happen too often, it's these moments fascinate me the most.
CRYSTAL VIEWS
Shot at Big Beach, Makena state park, Maui, Hawaii. Glassy waves shot from behind give a sense of looking into another world. Fish must be fascinated when they see our 'land' world like this. I should have named this one Fisheye View.
FIRST LIGHT LIP
Getting in the water before dawn, this shot was the very first wave to roll through for me that day. it normally takes a few waves to get the lens port 'working' well. In this instance, thankfully, the port behaved right from the off & this shot was clear and crisp.
PUNCHING THRU BLUE
A personal favourite from my Marshall Islands trip back in 2013. I love how the glassy barrelling wave twists off into the distance, wrapped in a ghostly micro-bubble 'cloud' that glows, defining the wave shape and further adding to the sense of perspective.. and oooh that blue! This one is on my wall.
CYLINDER OF JUICE
Shot under morning light at Big Beach, Makena State Park, Maui, HI, back in November 2013.
PERFECT STORM
Shot under morning light at Big Beach, Makena State Park, Maui, HI, back in November 2014.
SEA CLEARLY
Shot in the Marshall Islands, December 2012, in some of the clearest water I have ever seen.
